Detailed description of Lighthouse Country Club

Lighthouse Country Club, previously named Packsaddle Country Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Kingsland, Texas, at the headwaters of Lake L.B.J.

The course was designed by Leon Howard and opened for play in 1968. In 2006, the golf course was completely rennovated and re-routed by Jerry Slack and Leon Howard.

Packsaddle Country Club in Kingsland acquired new owners and the new name, along with new management at the end of 2011. The new name, Lighthouse Country Club, is named for the new owner's, Rick & Mercy Howe, Midland-based business, Lighthouse Energy Solutions.

The club's previous owners filed for bankruptcy in 2008. The Howe's are cleaning up and reinvigorating the golf course and have changed the 18th hole from a par 4 to a par 3.

With multiple teeing areas and contoured fairways, the course offers golfers of all skill levels an enjoyable and appropriate challenge.

We drove from Austin to play this course and the only negative we had was they did not tell us when we made the reservation that they were aerating the greens resulting in us playing the front nine twice thus the negative for the staff. However the person checking us in discounted our fee. Putting was not great but not horrible either. The main thing I want to convey is this is a strategic course layout that needs to be played several times to feel comfortable on he course. Other than the aerated greens, it was in great shape and a joy to add to "out-of-town" fun courses

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, I wouldn't recommend this course

Proshop staff looks like they just got out of prison or may have fell off the shortbus. Never seen prison tatoos in a proshop before. I was greeted in the parking lot by the owners Rick and his wife Travis. They seem like a happy couple!

This course is now called LIGHTHOUSE COUNTRY CLUB. It was formerly known as Packsaddle, and may have carried with it throughout the years a kind of hardscrabble reputation (i.e., dry, not well-maintained, not worth the trip from the Austin area). Believe that now, and you'll be losing out on a real Hill Country gem. Interesting layout, will make you think (and think 3-wood while you're at it). Smooth greens--most of them pretty big. Subtle elevation changes. Affordable. Separate but on-premise restaurant which stays open late most of the week. Taken out of its Texas Hill Country context, it is a nice, accessible public course in really good shape. Put back into context, and given what the drought has done to even some of the better-known courses around here, it is in remarkable shape. If you're not getting out of the metro areas much, Lighthouse Country Club will feel like a vacation a world away. Come to think of it, given its proximity to Lake LBJ, weekend resorts, and water sports, that's not such a bad idea after all...

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Daily gathering of good golfers around 12:30 every day who play against each other in golf pro-selective teams. Losing teams have to chip in afterwards for the bar bill.
